The Rad Radish team partnered with Shoreline Plaza, a low-income housing facility for elderly and disabled individuals, to help provide its residents with fresh, healthy produce. After their initial interview, the team learned that one major problem facing the residents is a lack of access to fresh produce.
Due to their fixed income and other, more pressing, financial matters, residents can’t always afford fresh fruits and vegetables. The team first set out to redesign the residents’ garden boxes but soon decided that wasn’t realistic within the given time frame and the quickly approaching garden season. Instead, the team created a way to give Shoreline Plaza access to B grade/donated produce.
The team designed a wagon specifically for the farmers market that would allow businesses at the market to collect donated produce for the residents of Shoreline Plaza. After going to the farmers market, the team collected donations for Shoreline Plaza to help introduce more fresh vegetables and other produce into the residents’ diets. The residents were delighted to meet with the team and help them through the project. When they told the activities director that they had donations, she expressed gratitude for the group’s work.
