Community in the Classroom

A Spring 2019 DLab Case Study

The Community in the Classroom Design Lab team created a community that supports positive relationships between students and teachers in order to increase academic performance for students and job satisfaction for teachers.

They worked with Shelli Rambo, an English teacher at Eagle Academy. They chose community in the classroom when reflecting on the team’s past experiences in school and how to improve the experience for tomorrow’s students. The team approached the topic by empathizing with 10 teachers and students from public high schools. They determined that a 2-hour field day filled with group activities would be a low stress solution to the problem. A field day would build life long skills, like problem solving, give the students and teachers a break from their busy lives, and create community. The team’s implementation included taking the refined kit of activities to Ms. Rambo’s classroom for her to utilize once a quarter in the following years.

Students from Eagle Academy said that they will look forward to this field day each quarter. Ms. Rambo mentioned how her students had never been so happy before. The kit will be given to other classrooms and after school centers to utilize.
