Open Book Adventures is One Stone’s free tutoring and mentoring program for underserved kindergarteners through third grade students. Once a week for six weeks, the K - 3rd grade “Buddies” are paired with a One Stone “Adventure Guides” for an hour and a half of reading, writing, games and connection.
One Stone and the Idaho PTECH Network, together with Trailhead Boise, brought together their best bags of tricks to create PlayTech, a two-day gaming, hacking, coding, playing and 21st century skill building event designed to inspire high school students from across the state to pursue an education and career in the tech industry in Idaho.
How might we inspire a love of reading and writing in kids, while providing an opportunity to address summer learning loss?
Open Book Adventures is a tutoring and mentoring project for kindergarten through third grade children that inspires curiosity, and cultivates imagination through adventures in literacy. Using the design thinking process, the One Stone team has prototyped and tested the program, resulting in multiple iterations. For the first time this summer, the team decided to roll out a multi-day summer camp, providing a no-cost opportunity for kids to stay engaged in learning during the summer.
How might we empower student voice in the town of Kuna, Idaho through community improvement projects that bring more art and color to the town?Two days, nine projects, 90+ volunteers, 16 gallons of paint, 120 sandwiches, 1 million pounds of tumbleweeds that found a new home and COLOR EVERYWHERE best describes Break Through 2.015 Kuna—Colored Lens One Stone’s eighth annual alternative spring break.
How might we de-stigmatize depression in middle school, and provide students tools to seek help when they need it?When One Stone students learned of the high rate of depression and other mental health issues impacting teens, many of them felt an urgency to dive in, study the issue and learn how they might be part of a solution to a complex problem. That solution was BECOME; a day of peer-to-peer self esteem development that empowered students to BECOME a free, strong, accepting and ONE community.
How might we improve literacy skills for underserved kids in K – 3rd grade?Open Book Adventures was One Stone’s fourth iteration of our original literacy program for underserved kids. The student leadership team has learned through our past prototypes that themes that are accessible and provide multiple ways to express help to make the learning more fun for the kids, so this time, they chose color as a theme. Each week, 20 K – 3rd grade kids and their One Stone reading buddies took the color theme all the way through, dressing in the color of the week, eating snacks in the same color and doing color-centered writing and drawing activities together.
How might we encourage middle school students to make good life choices by teaching life skills in an engaging way?Thirty Hillside Jr. High AVID students spent the morning playing one of the most important games they'll ever play: the LEARN, IMAGINE, FREEDOM, EXPLORE experience (L.I.F.E.x) with One Stone team members. More than just a game, L.I.F.E.x is an interactive education tool that encourages learning in critical life skills and encourages college education.
