This Design Lab team is very passionate about being in the outdoors. They began the design process by examining issues surrounding outdoor first aid, avalanche safety, and outdoor preparedness.
They decided to focus on getting teens who don’t normally experience nature into the outdoors, knowing that people don’t always have the knowledge or proper connections to do so safely. The team also researched how technology and outdoor activities contribute to the emotional well-being of teens. In light of this, they considered different outdoor activities, including rock climbing, zip-lining, electric biking, and backpacking. They researched unique groups of teenagers who could participate in these activities, such as e-sports teams and the teens members of the Boys and Girls Club.
The team then came up with the idea of a day trip with a small group of teen refugees. In partnership with Generation Wild, they taught the teens how to fly fish on July 7. They designed this trip so that refugees can have outdoor experiences they wouldn’t normally have access to, and potentially gain a life-long appreciation for the outdoors.
