A Spring 2019 DLab Case Study
The Vaping Prevention Education Design Lab team identified the significant increase of vape use by minors as an issue threatening their health. After researching possible causes and potential solutions, the team came up with the question: How might we make vaping appear less appealing to at-risk elementary students?
The team began by empathizing with elementary school students by visiting with them and discussing the issue of vaping. From here, the group decided that the best way to spread awareness about the risks of vaping was to provide students with information and have them create original artwork based on it. They proposed their idea to different elementary schools in Boise; the first class to respond with approval was Mrs. Kaufman’s class at White Pine Elementary. The class watched an informational video about the harmful effects of vaping, after which students created anti-vaping art. Everyone voted on their favorite artwork, which the team then turned into stickers for the winner to give to their friends. This encouraged discussions about the harm of vaping, thus decreasing the likelihood that those students will vape in the future.
