The Self Defense Design Lab’s end user was junior and senior high school girls preparing for college. The team sought to increase the girls’ confidence in their ability to protect themselves in a new environment.
The team’s How Might We question was: “How might we help junior and senior high school girls feel confident in their ability to protect themselves going into college?” To solve this problem, the team decided to hold a self defense class for junior and senior high school girls.
To make this different than other self defense classes, the team decided to add an educational aspect to their event. They did so by planning elements of the class to teach the “why” behind self defense, share red flags, and practice physical self defense skills. The team held their class in May 2019, in hopes of training participants to defend themselves, along with increasing their self confidence.
