A Fall 2018 DLab Case Study
High school students often face negative stigmas when seeking access to information about their sexual and reproductive health. This team set out with a goal to help decrease these stigmas and support teens in finding sexual and reproductive health information.
During the empathy phase, they engaged in immersion experiences with Planned Parenthood, Terry Reilly Health Services, and the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence. From research and interview insights, the team developed the following question to explore: How might we reduce the negative stigma around high school students in Boise seeking information about sexual health?
During one brainstorming session, one of the members shouted, “A cooking class!” The group was put into contact with two biology majors from The College of Idaho who are also passionate about providing information to teens about sexual and reproductive health. This collaboration provided the team with information and helped them hold their first cooking class. The prototype cooking class was a huge success. Eight teens enjoyed their time cooking while learning about sexual health. Using pre- and post-event surveys, the team members have made a few adjustments to their approach and programming. They are now ready for their final implementation cooking class in January.
