One Stone Remote

One Stone Remote is a development initiative to increase Lab51 enrollment and engagement in our studios and labs by expanding remote and blended learning opportunities to high school students beyond Boise.

At the outset of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020, One Stone quickly embraced the power of the pivot by transitioning learning experiences into remote opportunities. Because adaptability, flexibility, and empathy are a key part of One Stone’s culture, this was yet another opportunity for learners and coaches to lean into One Stone’s core values during a time of uncertainty to find meaning, purpose and passion. One Stone Remote kept learners active, engaged and connected to their learning, as well as to their coaches and peers, during a challenging time.

What’s the Power of the Pivot? It’s knowing that plans can change without warning, but recognizing opportunity in the unexpected. Right now, the world – students and educators in particular – are being called to adapt to a changing landscape. One Stone is leading the way. Our pivot to remote learning in the Spring of 2020 was highlighted by Getting Smart and Transcend Education.

One Stone Remote provides a unique opportunity for learners in rural areas or neighboring regions to engage in student-driven, growth-based learning and experiences that uncover passion and purpose, without the logistical challenges and health concerns of face-to-face meetings.

Learners and educators around the country can connect with One Stone Remote to engage meaningfully with peers who are hundreds or thousands of miles away. Not only do these connections vastly increase the opportunities for exploring new skills and ideas, but they allow learners to uncover mutual passions and purpose, building a reservoir of empathy for the challenges faced by other communities across the country.

Learning how to work remotely is a crucial career skill and I’m glad I am experiencing it now, so any time I need to work from home I am more prepared.

The Power of the Pivot

At 9 a.m. on Monday, March 16, One Stone’s Lab School students checked in with their coaches, just like they would on any other day. But on this particular morning, and every morning for the foreseeable future, their connection would be made remotely.

One Stone students are learning in spite of — and more specifically, learning from — the ambiguity and uncertainty brought on by the coronavirus pandemic…

One Stone, One Community

Few of us in our lifetimes have witnessed the degree of global uncertainty and ambiguity we now face as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Educators are being forced to adapt fast. But the shift to remote learning has been relatively seamless for One Stone, a nonprofit that empowers high school students through student-driven after-school programs and its innovative Lab School in Boise, Idaho.

I’m learning time management and have been focusing a lot on how to delegate roles and the importance of taking time to check in with myself and see how I am doing. I‘ve also been learning the importance of fostering little moments of delight throughout the day – the little things that bring me happiness or a feeling of accomplishment.”

I work from home, but it’s been a relief that One Stone is powering through, keeping connections. And other than (its) actual location, it feels somewhat normal.
