Making “Sense” of Sensory Issues

For many students with special needs at Timberline High school, feeling overwhelmed and overstimulated is an issue. Unfortunately, the school does not have the resources to cater to each student's needs or to have calming objects always available. This Design Lab team saw this issue and decided to hit the ground running. They created a dynamic sensory board and developed the How Might We Statement, “How might we create a sensory board for students with exceptionalities at Timberline, knowing that they have the potential of damaging what’s on the sensory board and also keeping in mind all the students’ needs?” to guide their problem.

The sensory board was implemented at Timberline in May 2019. In order to collect data on the success of the board, the team checked back with Timberline after one month of use to interview the students and teachers and gain insight into the implementation and effectiveness of the board.
