Human-centered design (HCD) is a creative problem solving and innovation discovery process that is rooted in – and driven by – empathy. The Design Thinking for Educators program will equip leaders with the practices and resources they need to effectively guide students in the process of using human-centered design to solve real-world problems, all while guiding students in the development of transferable durable skills. During this 4 week hybrid seminar series, participants will explore design mindsets, develop the tools to implement student-driven design thinking, and explore strategies to unleash the creative problem solving potential of their students. As a cohort, we will engage in relevant, reflective discussions, learn by doing, and share stories of insight and engagement as we unpack the tools needed to become guides in our students’ human-centered design journey.

This course uses a hybrid program model, blending asynchronous online learning and synchronous virtual group meetings. Online learning modules are hosted by Journey.do, a web and app-based learning platform developed by Arizona State University. While the asynchronous work is completed independently, each online module includes essential opportunities for feedback and collaboration with other participants. A 45-minute orientation and three 90-minute synchronous virtual sessions are time for collaboration, digging deeper, and learning from each other. The complete HCD for Educators program includes approximately 20 hours of professional growth engagement.
To be certified as a HCD coach, participants must:
Complete all online learning modules in Journey.do. Module completion includes connecting with (by commenting on) a minimum of one module story, completing all module reflection “grows”, uploading any/all required learning artifacts, and publishing a module story.
Attend all synchronous sessions.
Complete the course Reflection Form.
Certified HCD coaches will gain online access to One Stone’s Design Thinking Toolkit. The toolkit is a collection of HCD resources, skills, and activities for designers of all abilities. Coming for the 2023-24 school year, certified HCD coaches will be able to subscribe to student-facing HCD learning modules on Journey.do (see HCD for High School Students for more information.)
