About This Project

How might we give children with health challenges hope and purpose for the future?

The One Stone team wanted to make a difference to children coping with health challenges and life threatening illnesses. Through their empathy work, the team recognized that one of the most meaningful experiences they could create for children facing these challenges was the opportunity to connect with others facing similar challenges and to “feel like a normal kid.” The team learned that children with health challenges are not often invited to tackle the same challenging and youthful obstacles that healthy children so often do, the project team chose to address this need.

In partnership with Camp River Run and Carrington College, the team put together a day camp where children with health challenges were able to dream big and participate in fun and challenging activities. The event took place on Saturday, March 5 at the Carrington College campus. The group had developed four interactive and meaningful stations for the event. The campers created a beautiful Hot Air Balloon art installation that represented where they hope to go either literally or metaphorically in the future. This art project will have lasting presence as it will be displayed at the week long summer camp this summer. The campers also wrote exciting fictional stories about themselves, performed their very own skits, and competed in humorous “Minute to Win It” games.

Outcomes
The day of the Imagine day camp went extremely well due to the careful planning of the team. The children had a wonderful time connecting with each other and getting to know the One Stone students too. They created some beautiful hot air balloons full of their dreams and had tremendous fun completing the ridiculous “Minute to Win It” activities.

The One Stone students were truly inspired by the campers’ enthusiasm and joy. They commented on the true connection the children made with each other and how comfortable they all seemed to be within the Camp River Run community.
